Born in South London but grew up in Gozo, one of the Maltese islands.
Ben currently lives in North Norfolk, but his eyes are on the world.
When Ben is not performing you will usually find him cooking. As well as working as a chef he runs his own pizza business and can be found at various sites over the summer making and selling some of the best pizzas money can buy.
An article likened Ben Denny Mo’s voice to “the playful rhythms of Jack Johnson, the grunts of Dave Matthews and Bruce Springsteen, the inflections of Michael Jackson, the croons of Sam Smith – and a variety of ’90s vocal techniques as heard in Hootie & the Blowfish’s “Use Me”, Counting Crows’ “Mr. Jones”, Del Amitri’s “Roll To Me”, Dave Matthews Band’s Crash Into Me, and even Maroon 5’s “This Love”.”
Ben suffers from severe dyslexia and discovered at an early age that playing the guitar and singing was the perfect escape from the academic struggles he had at school. As a young teenager he could be found playing alongside some of Malta’s best musicians and this played a big part in influencing his musical style which covers soul, funk, folk, jazz, reggae, and ska.
The likes of John Martyn, Led Zeppelin, and John Butler have also heavily influenced his guitar playing and he has become known as the “2 capo man”, often performing with 2 capos on his acoustic guitar.
His first single Heart Sleeves was a BBC Norfolk Record of the Week and he performed at BBC Music Day. BBC Introducing in Norfolk are big fans of Ben. In 2019 he has played Small World at Glastonbury, Give, Small World Summer Festival and Cambridge Folk Festival, as well as a live session on The James Whale radio show. Ben is a must-see emerging artist in Norfolk and London, twice being invited to play at Omeara.
In 2018 Ben recorded 6 songs with producer/engineer Rhys Downing (Mark Ronson and more recently co-writer for The Last Dinner Party and occasional drummer for the band), who took Ben’s acoustic songs and created a wall of sound. Summer 2019 saw Ben working again with Rhys Downing, recording new songs in studios in Norfolk and and London (including Abbey Road). The resulting sound was sometimes reminiscent of Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse, introducing Ben to a new audience of fans.
Lockdown gave Ben the opportunity to set up his own bedroom studio and the chance to experiment more with sounds. He also managed to record a new album in his bedroom. 2021 also saw Ben become part of The Dual, a Norwich based band that is just himself and drummer Matt Furness. Described as a sounding somewhere between Led Zeppelin and Jeff Buckley, they create a sound of a much bigger band, thanks to both being hugely talented musicians.
Move forward to 2023 and Ben was back in the studio, this time with Jack Murphy at Crystal Sounds Studio in Norfolk. A far more stripped back sound was recorded, but it still has its big orchestral style moments.
2024 will see the coming together of the last few years with Ben's debut album release on vinyl, featuring all the 2023 and 2019 songs in one place.
Recorded live at Banham Barrel, I really like some of the tracks captured here, especially the closing acoustic guitar track Metamorphis. Hope you enjoy.
My new single, I Hear a Train, is now available worldwide. The video received its premiere on Music Crowns. Here is the video for you all to enjoy.
New single Eden is available worldwide. You can listen to it below. Full video to follow. Taking time to get permission to set fire to Norwich!
A short video featuring a couple of new songs coming your way and a look back of some of the places I've been fortunate enough to play before lockdowns,
You won't currently find this elsewhere so this is an exclusive BenDennyMo.com. Whilst recording at Abbey Road Studios last year I played a couple of instrumental jams with a great drummer John Russell. We totally winged it with no rehearsal.
I was invited in to BBC Radio Norfolk at Christmas to play some festive songs on the Sophie Little Show. This is the first song I played - Someday At Christmas - originally released by Stevie Wonder. I dug out an old Pearl Jam version and gave it a Ben Denny Mo spin. People seem to like it with over 25,000 plays on my Facebook page in just over a week.
My homage to The Joker is now available world wide, including Gotham City - Jester
Really proud of this video - featuring me and Betty, and a lot of dancing.
Single now available on all major streaming sites
